Happiness House’s Structured Day Program Receives Award
In October 2003 Happiness House was presented with the
Program Services Award during the Cerebral Palsy
Association of New York State’s annual conference in Albany.
The Program Services Award recognizes an Affiliate or Division of Cerebral Palsy
Association of New York State that has provided an exemplary program to individuals
with disabilities, which has enhanced the independence and self-esteem of its
participants and which serves as a model to be replicated across the State.
Happiness House’s innovative Structured Day Program was started in 1996
as a Traumatic Brain Injury Waiver Program intended to provide consumers with
an opportunity to meet others, while addressing some social and rehabilitative
needs. Today, the Happiness House Structured Day Program serves more than forty
individuals through enrichment sessions, similar in nature to adult education
courses, in computers, woodworking, horticulture and other topics. Happiness
House has also developed a pre-vocational track to assess and develop the skills
of consumers. This has given them the opportunity to participate in a small
business venture promoting the sale of helmets to the public, and to provide
information on preventing head injury. The program provides a community service,
while providing consumers with valuable business experience.
