Happiness House Purchases New Piece Of Equipment For Preschool Program
The “LITEGAIT” with Treadmill

Happiness House recently purchased a new state-of theart piece of equipment, the Walkable Pediatric LiteGait with Treadmill, which is used to help pre-school students with gross motor coordination. The Walkable Pediatric LiteGait with Treadmill is a gait and balance training system. It allows children to work on their walking, creeping and balancing skills before and after they are independent walkers. Initially, these devices allow the child to develop confidence and skill with walking by allowing the child to move their legs freely while being supported by handlebars, as well as straps and a harness, if needed. This is also known as “partial weight bearing therapy” or “PWBT”. As the child’s balance and walking skills develop, less support is given. For example, a child like Erin, may start with the full complement of handlebars, straps and harness. As she develops improved trunk control and balance reactions, the child may “graduate” from needing the straps and harness. With further practice, the child may develop the skill to walk without holding onto the handlebars. As the child progresses further, the treadmill can be used to target specific gait deviations, or strength deficits. For example, the treadmill may be used in an inclined position to help the hamstring and gluteal muscle groups develop. Walking sideways on the treadmill causes the hip abductor muscles on the sides of the body to develop, thus creating more stability with the child’s gait. Alternating speeds may be used to help the child learn to coordinate various muscle groups, andlearn to maintain balance while accelerating and decelerating their body. The treadmill can even be used to develop agility and high level balance and coordination by changing directions while in motion, as well as walking for periods of time in a backwards, or sideways direction. Use of the treadmill helps the child in a physical way, via motor control, by helping them to use both sides of their body together. However, and perhaps more importantly, the brain itself responds to this activity in the same way. As such, use of the Walkable Pediatric LiteGait with treadmill is an excellent way for the child to “prime” her brain for the ultimate task...learning.

AGENCY HIGHLIGHTS

Programs/Services
Goal – Happiness House will provide innovative, state-of-the-art, comprehensive services based upon the goals and outcomes identified by people we serve and their families.

Accomplishments

• Implemented an enhanced program for children on the Autism spectrum at the Geneva/Canandaigua Sites.
• 15+ families regularly attend monthly Autism Support Group meetings.
• Served over 750 children and families from 23 school districts through Children’s Programs.
• Happiness House has hired an Autism consultant for our classrooms in Geneva and Canandaigua.
• Evaluated 396 infants and preschoolers through Evaluation Services
• Continued our commitment to collaborate with local organizations by partnering with Canandaigua City School District, Clifton Springs Hospital, Geneva City School District, Ontario ARC, Wayne ARC, Waterloo Central School District.
• Geneva City School District started a UPK program and Happiness House has served 10 students.
• The Summer Recreation Program celebrated 27 years of service serving 52 individuals annually.
• The John P. Cleary Memorial Award was presented to Connie Ward in June 2006 and to Todd Beach and posthumously to Ernie Dennis (Ernie’s wife Joan accepted the award on his behalf) in December 2006.
• Opening of the new Canandaigua site.
• Expanded aqua therapy services to serve 33% more consumers.
• Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) - this group is run by consumers of the Traumatic Brain Injury Day Program and is open to consumers, staff, families, and the community.
• The Traumatic Brain Injury Pre-Vocational Program hosted a conference for persons with brain injury.
• Protect-A-Head Program continues to provide information on preventing head injuries while supplying the community with quality low cost helmets at seven events.
• Early Intervention Service Coordination grew by 60%.
• The Traumatic Brain Injury Day Program began the “Community Helper Group”. This group provides support to needy families as well as offering projects and events for the Children’s Programs.
• The Traumatic Brain Injury Day Program consumers provided volunteer services to eleven agencies (Meals on Wheels, Red Cross, Elm Manor, Wood Library, Pet Pride, Gleaners Kitchen, Linden Exchange, Friendship House, Salvation Army, Happiness House Children’s Programs and Brighter Days).

Human Resources
Goal – Happiness House will create a work environment that promotes growth, flexibility, motivation and productivity in our employees as stakeholders in the organization.

Accomplishments

• Distributed more than 200 agency - wide updated Personnel Policy Manuals to all employees.
• The 8th Annual Employee Recognition and Celebration Event was held at the Inn On the Lake in Canandaigua with presentations of the Mary W. Griswold Professional Award to Anne Battaglia, Deborah Rockefeller and Susan Dancause.
• Recognized 22 staff members with the “Years of Service Awards”.
• More than 180 individuals attended the annual Happiness House agency conference on “Mixed Nuts”.
• Jennifer Inscho and Jill Mundy were presented with a Certificate of Employee Recognition at the 2006 Cerebral Palsy Conference “Decades of Dedication” in Albany.
• Initiated a Training Committee to enhance the training programs at Happiness House by centralizing resources and unifying the format of training.
  

Growth and Expansion
Goal – Happiness House will position itself on a local, regional and state level to take full advantage of future opportunities for new or expanded programs and services.

Accomplishments

• Completion and ribbon cutting ceremony of a 23,000 square foot facility in Canandaigua, New York with expanded educational, therapeutic and recreational services for children and adults with disabilities.
• Construction of a playground at the Preschool and Daycare Programs at the Canandaigua site.
  

Organizational Quality
Goal – Happiness House will be a leader in the implementation of quality management practices.

Accomplishments

• Successful external audits were completed for numerous programs and services.
• Completed customer service satisfaction surveys.
• Developed plans of quality improvement for program areas based on customer surveys.
• Received a two year certification for the Gorham residence following a perfect audit.
• Customer satisfaction telephone surveys conducted for Adult Program Home Services and Service Coordination.
• Staff orientation training materials were updated.
  
  

Community Relations
Goal – Happiness House will be known and supported throughout the communities we serve as the expert in providing quality services to people with and without disabilities.

Accomplishments

• Benefited from more than 7500 hours from 93 volunteers in the past year.
• Featured in numerous publications including billboards, newspapers and media coverage.
• Hosted a very successful 4th Annual Gala Dinner and Auction at the Belhurst in Geneva that raised more than $39,000.
• Awarded a $150,000 grant from The B. Thomas Golisano Foundation.
• Beneficiary of the Terry Meath Memorial Golf Tournament for the 8th consecutive year and a three time recipeint of the Carol L. Schaefer Memorial Golf Tournament.
• Chuck Meyn was presented with the first “Volunteer of the Year” Award.
• The TBI program participants received the “People’s Choice Award” from Granger Homestead, and the first “You Make It Happen” Award from Dixon Schwabl Advertising, Inc.
• Five students from Hobart & William Smith College volunteered as part of the college “Day of Service”.
• Twenty-one area high school seniors were recipients of the Happiness House Elizabeth J. Amidon Memorial Award.
• Forty program participants modeled at our 3rd Annual Fashion show.
• Congressman Arcuri visited our agency and read a story to our Universal Pre-Kindergarten students.
• Recipient of additional Family Support Services funding through OMRDD/FLDDSO.
• Established relationships with over 300 new donors.
• Donated stuffed monkeys to the children at Thompson Hospital through the “Tina Angel Monkey Project”. This project is part of the TBI Structured Day Services Program.
• Secured additional grant money for children’s summer recreation program.
• A recipient of a United Way grant for the Autism Parent Library.
• Secured grant to fund our Autism Support Group.
• Secured grant for funding to provide regional training to Respite workers to enhance services that they provide to individuals with autism and their families.
• The recipient of the Canandaigua Elementary School’s Volunteer Award.
